The Incredible Journey of French Montana: Chosen for Greatness

The saying goes: “Tough times create strong people…” After watching The French Montana Story: For Khadija, I can attest to that.

This is not a rugs to riches story, this is a close and personal look into the life and remarkable journey of a man known as French Montana. His story is one of resilience, heartbreak, and triumph—a tale that bridges continents and cultures. Born in Casablanca, Morocco, French Montana’s early life may have been blessed with comfort and stability, but all of that would change when his charming and successful father uprooted his wife and two kids and went in search of the Promised Land, USA.

Facing the harsh realities of a less than welcoming environment in The Bronx, New York, French Montana’s father opted to return to Morocco after a string of failed business ventures. His mom, Khadijah, his two younger brothers, and himself, stayed in the States and waited for their father’s return, which never was to be. These formative years were marked by danger, hardship, and sacrifice, but they also shaped the determined spirit that would later define his career. In French’s words: “Even when he did wrong, he did right (referring to his father). He left me to be French Montana”.

While hustling to make ends meet, French Montana found his saving grace in music. Over time, his persistence paid off. However, the path to success was not without losses. French faced devastating tragedies, including the death and incarceration of people closest to him. These losses could have broken him, but instead, they fueled his determination to use his platform for good. “Hustlers don’t quit till they make it!”- French Montana

In the wake of his success, and unbearable pain, French Montana turned his eyes back to his roots in Africa. He connected with a group of young dancers from Uganda after discovering them on YouTube (back then known as the Triplets Ghetto Kids), helping them gain international exposure by bringing them to perform in America. Witnessing their talent, zest for life, their bright smiles and happiness in its purest form (in spite of having almost nothing) urged him to take action beyond the stage. Montana realized the true meaning of wealth: “If you’re not rich at heart, you’ll never be rich”, he concluded. French began funding the construction of healthcare clinics in underserved African communities, providing vital services to those in need.

“Many people use Africa, but they never give back to Africa… and I was getting tired of that”.

When reflecting on his life, French Montana shared a powerful mantra: “I never had energy to hold on to grudges”. This philosophy has shaped his relationships, including the decision to forgive his father and rekindle their relationship—a poignant reminder of his capacity for compassion and growth.

French Montana’s journey is a testament to the immigrant experience, the struggle to build a better life, and the strength needed to overcome adversity. His documentary offers a raw, unfiltered look at the challenges of being an undocumented immigrant in America: the risks, the heartbreak, and the perseverance required to succeed against all odds.

Behind the glitz and glamour of all that comes from a successful music career in Hip-Hop/Rap, lies a story of deep family ties, unwavering love for his mother, and a commitment to giving back. His mother, a beacon of strength, remains central to his story, embodying the connection to family, culture, and roots that has guided him throughout his life.

A Force for Good

Despite facing violence, deception, and personal struggles, we witness French Montana emerge as not only a musical icon with more than 40 billion digital streams by 2023 (making him the most streamed African-born musician in history), but also a philanthropist who is changing the lives and communities worldwide, for the better. His efforts in Africa and his commitment to uplifting others exemplify his evolution into a force for good. He continues to honor his roles as a devoted son, loving father, and supportive brother.

The French Montana Story: For Khadija, is a remarkable journey of heartbreak, life lessons, and redemption. It is a story of transformation—a young boy from Morocco who endured the harsh realities of The Bronx to become a global ambassador of hope, resilience, and compassion.
